Isaac Asimov

American science-fiction writer and biochemist, best known for the Foundation and Robot books.

About the author

Isaac Asimov wrote as if an idea were a machine whose casing could be removed. His prose is plain, his plots move quickly, and the pleasure lies in watching a problem change shape. Across the Robot, Galactic Empire, and Foundation books, he kept returning to one large question: how much of human behavior can be understood, predicted, or safely entrusted to rules?

Born in Soviet Russia and raised in Brooklyn from the age of three, Asimov trained as a chemist and later taught biochemistry at Boston University. Science was not decoration in his fiction. It gave him a method: define the terms, follow the consequences, and let a seemingly tidy system reveal its contradictions.

The Foundation stories work on the scale of centuries, turning the decline of a galactic civilization into a contest between historical forces and individual choices. The Robot stories bring the argument closer to home. Their famous laws appear precise, but Asimov used them to produce moral puzzles, detective stories, and situations in which the meaning of a rule matters as much as the rule itself.

He eventually joined his Robot, Galactic Empire, and Foundation books into a broad future history. The connections reward readers who continue, but the books do not demand a map at the door. A single mystery such as The Caves of Steel or the compact sweep of Foundation is enough to see why his work has remained an unusually accessible entrance to classic science fiction.

Where to start

Start with Foundation if you want the large canvas: a civilization in decline, a new science of history, and a plan meant to shorten the darkness between empires. Choose I, Robot for linked stories built around the logic and loopholes of robotic behavior. If you prefer a conventional plot with a crime at its center, begin with The Caves of Steel, where detective fiction and the Robot universe meet.
