Robert A. Caro is an American journalist and biographer whose work studies political power through archives, interviews, physical places, and the lives of people affected by decisions made far above them. His first book, The Power Broker, examined Robert Moses and New York.
The Years of Lyndon Johnson is a multivolume biography combining Johnson's life with institutional histories of Congress, the Senate, and the presidency. The Path to Power, Means of Ascent, Master of the Senate, and The Passage of Power are the first four volumes.
Where to start
Start with The Path to Power and read the Johnson volumes in order. Master of the Senate is the best single volume if you want Caro's method at full scale.
