Ocean Vuong

Vietnamese American poet, novelist, and essayist (born 1988).

About the author

Ocean Vuong is a Vietnamese American poet, novelist, and essayist who was born in Ho Chi Minh City and raised in the United States. His work explores migration, family, language, labour, masculinity, violence, memory, and queer life.

Night Sky with Exit Wounds established him as a poet, and On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous used the form of a son's letter to his mother. The Emperor of Gladness expands his fiction into a larger cast centred on care, work, addiction, and chosen family.

Where to start

Start with The Emperor of Gladness for a broad social novel, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous for an intimate letter-shaped narrative, or Night Sky with Exit Wounds for the poetry.
