About the author
Julia Ioffe is a Russian-born American journalist who has reported extensively on Russia, American politics, national security, and foreign policy. She left the Soviet Union as a child and later returned to Moscow as a correspondent.
Motherland combines reporting, history, oral accounts, and women from Ioffe's own family. The structure moves Russian women from the margin of national history to its main line of explanation.
