AUTHOR

Jane Austen

English novelist (1775–1817).

About the author

Jane Austen was an English novelist whose six completed novels turn courtship and domestic life into exact studies of judgment, money, class, and self-knowledge. Her irony is social but never impersonal: every joke changes how a character is seen.

Elizabeth Bennet, the second daughter, meets Darcy's coldness with a wit that refuses to be intimidated. She forms her opinion of him early and firmly — and then spends the rest of the novel discovering, with real discomfort, how much of that opinion was built on first impressions and wounded vanity. Austen lets the reader watch both of them being wrong in ways that feel painfully familiar.
