About the author
Yan Ge is the pen name of Chinese novelist Dai Yuexing. Writing in Chinese and English, she combines close social observation with folklore, appetite, bodily unease, and worlds where the boundary between ordinary people and strange beings is porous.
Strange Beasts of China is arranged as a zoological inquiry, but each beast exposes another human arrangement of work, memory, desire, and belonging. Yan Ge keeps the city familiar enough that the marvelous never feels safely elsewhere.
