About the author
Toni Morrison was an American novelist and editor who received both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her fiction made Black history, memory, family, language, and the afterlife of slavery central to the form of the American novel.
Morrison lets the truth arrive the way memory actually works — in fragments, out of order, resisted. The novel circles the event at its center: what Sethe did to her daughter when the slave catchers came, and why. It is revealed slowly enough that the reader, like the characters, must keep revising what they think of her.
