About the author
James Joyce was an Irish writer whose fiction made Dublin the center of formally experimental modern literature. Although he lived much of his adult life outside Ireland, the city's streets, speech, institutions, and private histories remained the material of his major books.
Dubliners moves through short stories toward the long closing movement of The Dead. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man follows Stephen Dedalus, Ulysses maps one day in 1904, and Finnegans Wake pushes multilingual wordplay and dream structure furthest.

Start with Dubliners for the clearest entrance, then A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man before Ulysses. Finnegans Wake is the final and most demanding step.
