About the author
J. R. R. Tolkien was an English writer, philologist, and Oxford professor. His scholarship in language and medieval literature informed the invented languages, histories, poems, and moral geography of Middle-earth.
The road carries Bilbo through trolls, goblin tunnels, Mirkwood, and the guarded halls of the Elvenking. In the dark beneath the mountains he meets Gollum and finds a small ring, an encounter that changes both this journey and the larger history Tolkien later told.
Where to start
Start with The Hobbit if you want a compact adventure and the gentlest entrance to Middle-earth. Choose The Lord of the Rings if you are ready for the larger history, a slower journey, and the full moral weight of the Ring.
