AUTHOR

Harper Lee

American novelist (1926–2016).

About the author

Harper Lee was an American novelist from Alabama. To Kill a Mockingbird, her defining work, places a child's moral education beside racial violence, legal failure, family memory, and the gap between a community's ideals and its conduct.

Lee lets Scout's limited understanding sharpen rather than soften the novel's account of Maycomb. Adult readers can see the racial and social rules operating around her even when she has not yet learned their names.
