About the author
Emily M. Bender is an American linguist and professor at the University of Washington. Her research includes computational linguistics, language technology, documentation, and the limits of treating linguistic form as evidence of understanding.
She co-authored influential criticism of very large language models and, with Alex Hanna, wrote The AI Con, a public-facing examination of AI marketing, labour, environmental costs, and institutional power.
