Emily Brontë was an English novelist and poet. Her only novel, Wuthering Heights, rejected polite romance for a story of attachment, possession, revenge, landscape, and damage passing from one generation to the next.
Catherine chooses comfort and status over Heathcliff, and Heathcliff answers with a lifelong campaign of revenge that consumes both families. Emily Brontë does not soften him, and she does not soften Catherine either; their love is presented as something elemental and destructive, closer to possession than to romance.
