AUTHOR

Charlotte Brontë

English novelist and poet (1816–1855).

About the author

Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist and poet who first published under the name Currer Bell. Jane Eyre joined Gothic atmosphere to the moral and emotional independence of a heroine determined to speak for herself.

Brontë gives Jane a first-person voice that refuses both self-pity and submission. The novel's romance matters because Jane will not accept love at the price of conscience, legal equality, or the independent self she fought to build.
