About the author
Barbara Kingsolver is an American novelist, essayist, and poet. Her work often joins intimate family stories to questions of poverty, social justice, ecology, and the obligations people carry toward a place and one another.
Barbara Kingsolver builds the novel on Charles Dickens's David Copperfield, transferring its orphan, villains, benefactors, and first-person momentum to contemporary Appalachia. The structure is borrowed; the voice and the political geography belong entirely to Demon.
